Continuing the journey to fish the waters of Harriman State Park………

It is early morning as I enter Harriman State Park from the south most entrance to the park from Route 17. As I enter the park the sun is just starting to rise. I smile and turn off the radio so I can take in the sounds of the park residents waking up or going to sleep, depending on the type of resident.

Lake Kanawauke

Today we are looking to fish Lake Kanawauke. Another one of the lakes that make up 7 Lakes Drive. The name of the lake means “place of much water”. It’s origin is Onondaga. There are actually 3 lakes that make up Lake Kanawauke, lower, middle and upper. The lower and middle lakes are man made as a result of damming in the early 1900’s. The lakes cover approximately 200 acres. Mom has motorized boats are allowed with permit.

The fishing opportunities include Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Bluegill and Yellow Perch.

The water vegetation is high in the summer and while pretty offers some challenges as to not losing too many lures. I thought that this was a perfect time to use a weedless frog.

Bass and Mr Frog

Mr. Largemouth agreed.
