A few years ago, our network of friends brought to our attention the annual fishing contest in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York. Macy’s had been a sponsor of this event since 1947. The contest was open to kids up to 15 years old. The NYC Park Rangers provided educational information to the kids such as the different species of fish (Largemouth bass, bluegill and pumpkinseed sunfish) located in the lake and their preferred diets.

We accompanied the TDYCC Fishing Club to this event on a hot Saturday in July. Although the temperature approached 100 degrees, it did not prevent the kids from having a good time. The kids fished with barb-less hooks to support the safe catch and release of both fish and turtles.

Urban areas often offer many opportunities to introduce kids and adults to the joys of fishing. A chance to build life long memories. We try to share these venues with you. Prospect Park Fishing
