Pier Fishing in the NC Outer Banks

I always look forward to my visits to the North Carolina Outer Banks and enjoy introducing others to the tranquility there.  I really enjoy the many opportunities to fish there; from charter fishing, surf fishing and pier fishing. A it’s get no better than

The good thing about the outer banks is that there are several piers that you can choose from.

The great thing about pier fishing for visitors is that the minimum that is needed is a few dollars. The entry fee (starting around $10) allows you to fish from the pier without having to buy a local fishing license in most cases (Check with the pier operators for any changes in rules) You can rent/buy a fishing pole and equipment and bait (Worms, shrimp, squid). The operators are also a good source of what bait to use, how to fish it and which fish are biting, depending on the time of year.

It get’s no better than fishing with your buddy. Catching a fish is a bonus.

If you want to bring your own equipment, look for a 7 foot pole, at least 12-15 pound test, fish can be large and you need to pull them up several feet to the pier; long net, pliers and a cooler to double for holding refreshments and holding your catch.

Depending on which pier you are visiting, you are able walk out a good ways to have good access to fish from. You can quickly identify the locals and regular visitors as they normally have multiple poles and are pulling coolers with refreshments and gear.  They are very knowledgeable and worth the investment of conversation and maybe sharing some refreshments.

You will see most people fishing early with sunrise or at dusk. Depending on the time of year you have the opportunity to catch red drum, puppy drum, sea trout, croakers, sea mullet, bluefish, spot and flounder, pompano, sheepshead.

And to top off your pier fishing experience, some of the pier restaurants such as Nags Head

will cook your catch to your request (Fried, broil, blackened or grilled.) Does it get any better….
