If you reside in or visit the NYC area, a good escape for a day of fishing is Harriman State Park, which is the second largest state park in New York. The Park spans both Rockland and Orange Counties and is less than 50 miles from NYC. The park is very popular with hikers and cyclists from various locales with some taking the train from NYC to the Tuxedo or Sloatsburg stop, to go hiking / camping for a day or more.

The great thing about the park is that depending upon the time of year you go, there are more than 17 different lakes, ponds and streams to fish. With names like Askoti, Wanoksink, Tiorati, Massawippa and Nawahunta, in addition to fishing you will also want to do some research to learn more about these fresh water opportunities. Depending on the lake or pond that you are fishing, you have the opportunity to catch a variety of fish. This includes brook, brown and rainbow trout, large and small mouth bass, sunfish, white and yellow perch, pickerel, catfish and crappie. There are additional fishing opportunities in nearby Sterling Forest and Rockland Lake.
